How to scan your room for HAUNTED: Space Setup step by step

In short

  • HAUNTED needs a scan of your room so characters can appear on your walls, floor and ceiling.
  • When you start, choose a scanned room or tap "Scan a new room".
  • Any room size works. What matters is clear floor space and good light.

HAUNTED: Are You Alone? plays out in your real room. Arms come out of your walls, a hole opens in your floor. For that to work, the headset has to know your room. That is what the room scan is for. In this guide, we show you how it works.

What a room scan is

During a room scan, you walk slowly around your room wearing the headset. The cameras on the headset pick up your walls, floor, ceiling and furniture. The headset remembers those surfaces. Meta calls this Space Setup (setting up your room).

Think of it as a floor plan the headset draws for itself. After that, every mixed-reality game (a game that shows your real room and lays characters over it) knows where a wall is and where a sofa stands.

What you need

  • Your Meta Quest with HAUNTED installed.
  • A room of your choice. According to the maker, any room size works.
  • Good, even light. Turn on the ceiling light.
  • About five to ten minutes.
  • A clear space in the middle of the room.

What it costs

The room scan is a free feature of the headset. HAUNTED itself cost £3.99 in the UK Meta store on 10 October 2026.

Clear up first

Clear up first. It helps with the scan and with safety. In HAUNTED you turn around, duck, swing an axe and crawl on your hands and knees.

  • Push the coffee table to the side.
  • Lay loose cables and rug edges flat.
  • Move glasses, vases and lamps out of arm’s reach.
  • Put pets in another room.
  • Close the curtains if direct sun comes in. Strong backlight upsets the cameras.

How to scan your room, step by step

  1. Stand in the middle of the clear space.
  2. Put on the headset and start HAUNTED.
  3. Read the two warning pages and confirm them.
  4. You now see the room list. It shows every room your headset already knows.
  5. If your room is not there yet, choose “Scan a new room”. That opens the headset’s room setup.
  6. Follow the prompts in the headset. Usually they ask you to look around slowly.
  7. Walk slowly around the room. Look at every wall, at the floor and up at the ceiling.
  8. Look into the corners and behind large furniture too, as far as you can.
  9. The headset shows you what it has picked up, often as lines or surfaces. Check that all the walls are covered.
  10. Confirm the scan. Depending on the software version, the button is called something like “Continue” or “Done”.
  11. You return to HAUNTED’s room list. Choose your new room.

Room setup looks a little different depending on your model and software version. On the Quest 3 and 3S the scan is usually faster and more accurate than on the Quest 2. That is down to the better cameras.

Why any room size works

The game adapts to your room. One example: in a chapter, something knocks from one of your walls. The game picks a wall it knows for that. In a small bedroom, that is simply a nearer wall.

Even so: the more clear floor space you have, the more relaxed you will play. You need to be able to turn and kneel without bumping into anything.

Which room suits best?

You can play in any room. A few things make it easier:

  • Clear walls: The game makes things come out of your walls. Walls without big wardrobes in front of them work best.
  • A clear floor: In one chapter a hole opens in the floor. In another you crawl across the floor. A soft rug is kind on the knees.
  • A normal ceiling height: The ceiling is part of the play area too.
  • Little foot traffic: A room few people walk through is safer.

A living room with the coffee table pushed aside is the best choice for many people. A cluttered study, less so.

Good to know

  • One scan per room: The headset can know several rooms. You choose which one to play in each time you start HAUNTED.
  • Moved the furniture? Then the scan no longer matches. Scan again.
  • Your privacy: According to the studio’s privacy policy, HAUNTED collects no data. Your save stays on the headset.
  • Mirrors and glass: Large mirrors or glass doors can confuse the headset. A cloth over them can help.
  • The play boundary: Watch out for the boundary (the invisible edge of your play area) too. It warns you when you get too close to a wall.

If something goes wrong

  • The headset cannot find any walls: Turn on more lights. Walk more slowly and closer to the walls.
  • Characters appear in furniture or behind the sofa: Scan the room again. This time, let the headset pick up the furniture as well.
  • The scan stops partway: Take the headset off for a moment. Restart it and try again.
  • Your room is not in the list: Choose “Scan a new room” and scan it.
  • You play in a different room later: You can do that through the settings in HAUNTED’s main menu. There you can switch rooms.
