What is Laser Thief? Explained in plain English

In short

  • Laser Thief is a game for Meta Quest headsets, where glowing lasers appear in your real room.
  • You grab some loot on the other side and bring it back without touching a beam.
  • It cost a one-off £7.99 in the UK Meta Store on 10 October 2026, with no subscription.
  • You need a Quest headset and, ideally, around 3 × 3 metres of clear floor space.

You may have heard that you can dodge “lasers in the living room” with a VR headset. That is exactly what Laser Thief is. In this guide, we explain calmly and step by step what the game is. You will also find out what you need, what it costs and whether it suits you.

What Laser Thief is

Laser Thief is a game for Meta Quest headsets. A headset is a pair of goggles with a screen built in, which you put on like a diving mask.

The game uses mixed reality. That means you see your real room through the headset’s cameras. The game lays glowing laser beams over the top. This feature is called passthrough (the headset shows you your real room through its cameras).

Your task, simply put:

  1. You stand on a glowing start pad on the floor.
  2. A countdown runs 3, 2, 1. Then the lasers switch on.
  3. On the other side of the room, some loot is waiting — a diamond or a crown, say.
  4. You move over there carefully, without touching a beam.
  5. You grab the loot and bring it back to the start pad.

Along the way you duck, step over low beams, turn sideways or wait a moment. You do not have to crawl. The lowest move is a deep crouch.

The story in two sentences

According to the studio, the game is set in “Neon City” in the year 2089. A company called HALO Corp has stolen the “Heart of Light”, a crystal that keeps the city lit. A little flying robot called BLIP asks you to bring it back. BLIP stays with you throughout the game, giving tips and making little jokes.

What you will find in the game

According to the studio, Laser Thief contains these parts:

  • Story: 120 levels across five worlds, with names like Neon Vault and Crystal Museum. A level is a single task or round.
  • Dancing Lasers: 10 shows where the lasers move to music.
  • Bomb Run: you have 120 seconds to grab as much loot as you can.
  • Endless Heist: endless new rooms that slowly get harder. You have three lives.
  • Free Mode: you decide yourself where the start and finish are in your room.

For a start, the Story is plenty. You can explore the other parts later.

What the colours mean

Every laser colour follows a fixed rule. Red, for example, is always dangerous. Cyan (a light turquoise) only triggers if you move quickly. There are eight colours in all. The game introduces them one at a time, not all at once. In the menu you will find a “LASER DICTIONARY” (a laser dictionary) that explains each colour briefly.

What you need

  • A Meta Quest headset. According to the store page (as of 10 October 2026), the game runs on the Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S.
  • A Meta account and the Meta Horizon app on your phone. Most people already set up both when they set up the headset.
  • Space. The store recommends at least 3 × 3 metres of clear floor. But the game also adapts its levels to smaller and awkwardly shaped rooms.
  • Some storage space. According to the store page, the install needs around 609 megabytes (MB, a unit for measuring amounts of data).
  • Your hands or the controllers. Controllers are the two handgrips that come with the headset. The game works with either.

You do not need an internet connection to play, according to the store page. You only need one to buy and download it.

What it costs

In the UK Meta Store, Laser Thief cost a one-off £7.99 on 10 October 2026. There is no subscription (no regular payment). According to the store page, the game shows no adverts either.

Prices can change. You can always see the current price on the Laser Thief page in the Meta Store before you pay.

Honestly, the biggest expense is the headset itself. If you do not have one yet, it costs many times more than the game.

Your first session, step by step

  1. Clear the floor. Move vases, glasses and trip hazards out of the way.
  2. Put the headset on and start Laser Thief.
  3. Under “CHOOSE YOUR HEIST SITE”, choose your room. If you have no room scan (the headset measuring your room), choose “QUICK PLAY”.
  4. Watch the short introduction. It lasts about a minute and a half.
  5. Do the Thief Training with BLIP. It has five short practice lessons.
  6. After that you will see the home screen. Press “PLAY” to begin the first level.

Who Laser Thief suits

Laser Thief suits you well if:

  • You like to be moving about, but do not want to do a workout.
  • You want a game where mistakes are not punished. In the Story there is no “Game Over” (no final losing). You simply go back to the start pad.
  • You have family or friends who want to take turns. Only one person plays at a time.
  • You like a calm pace. You can choose an easy setting with three shields.

Laser Thief suits you less if:

  • You can only play sitting down. The game is made for standing and walking around the room.
  • You have very little clear floor space.
  • You want to play online with other people. The game has no multiplayer mode.

Good to know

  • The age rating in the store is PEGI 12 (a European age recommendation).
  • Meta rates the comfort as “Comfortable for some”. Start with short sessions.
  • Your feet and legs do not trigger any lasers. Only your head, upper body, arms and hands count.
  • According to the studio, the game offers 16 languages for the menus, including German and English.
  • Take breaks and have a drink now and then.

If something goes wrong

  • The lasers are in the wrong place: Under “SETTINGS”, choose “RESCAN / CHANGE ROOM” and have your room measured again.
  • Your hands are not recognised: Make the light brighter. Or pick up the controllers.
  • A level is too hard: After five failed attempts, a “SKIP LEVEL” button appears next to the start pad. That lets you skip the level.
  • You feel unwell: Take the headset off and sit down. Play for a shorter time next time.
